Fire ants can turn a good lawn into a headache fast. If you’ve ever stepped near one of their mounds, you know how quickly they react. One moment the yard looks normal, and the next you’ve got a pile of soil that wasn’t there yesterday.

Understanding the Problem

A fire ant mound on the surface doesn’t tell the whole story. What you see above ground is only a small part of the colony. Most of the ants and usually several queens stay deeper in the soil. That’s why simply knocking down the mound or treating the top doesn’t do much. Sometimes the colony even moves a few feet away and sets up again. We see that a lot after storms or heavy irrigation.

Some yards will have one obvious mound. Other times there are several smaller ones hidden near shrubs, fences, or shaded corners that don’t get noticed right away. When we walk on a property, we’re looking for all of those signs, not just the main mound.
